The Catrobat A Cat, the Captain and his Wife, the Campers and the Crook all travel to Florida. They drive on the old Route One in the post war 1940’s.
The story begins one Sunday in 1946. A very gifted kitten shows up in the backyard of the Captain. The Captain discovers the kitten's talent, names him Wiley, and develops him into a talented acrobatic cat---A Catrobat.
The Captain was a World War II draftee who found a home in the Army and was kept on as a career officer in the Pentagon after the war. He is in demand despite serious wartime injuries. His wife is a former schoolteacher who worked in the defense plants during the war. Now, she is a housewife.
The effects of the war linger on as the Captain nearly dies while assigned to the Pentagon. This occurs during the biggest snowstorm on the East Coast in fifty years. He is granted medical leave to complete his recovery in Florida. His wife joins him for a long delayed honeymoon. Wiley the Catrobat finds a clever way to go with them as a stowaway.
The campers are French Canadians from Quebec and Rhode Island who gather together in Florida for a family reunion with family in Hollywood, Florida.
The Crook is a prison escapee from Canada who sneaks into the United States through Minnesota. He is a French-Canadian Métis, who became part of the Canadian Nazi movement. During the war he blends into the French Canadian community in New England. He is hired by one of the campers and falls for the teenage daughter. He chases after her and they all wind up in Hollywood, Florida where the Captain confronts his old childhood enemy, the Crook.
