The Tuxedoed Man is the second in the Mendenhall Mysteries series featuring Kate Williams, newly hired chief of police. The first was The Shoeless Kid, in which Kate deals with a mutinous deputy chief and a missing boy, and the Cop Games that have invaded her tiny town.

This was an unexpected find on Omnimystery News -- a GREAT website. I had never heard of (apparently well-established) Marcelle Dube, but this novel has convinced me that I should buy ALL her books. The excitement let up only briefly for us to get to know Chief Kate Williams through her unsentimental reflections. . She's a terrific personality, all the more so because she is a mature woman. (The ingenue is her niece.) The details of the crime scene in chapter one are riveting. The Canadian setting is almost northern European. As the temperatures drop further and further below freezing, the investigation and the relationships heat up. The right-sized cast of strong characters gives me hope for many more stories about Mendenhall Police Department.Product details

A train wreck and a dead man in a tuxedo in middle of a frigid, snow-covered field open Dube's wonderful second book in the Mendenhall mystery series.
Not only does Dube keep you guessing with the twists and turns as the mystery unfolds, but the best part of this story is the building relationships that the heroine, Kate Williams, has with her police constables and her visiting niece. Dube does a wonderul job of giving us the unique, world-weary perspectives of a female Chief of police in a small prairie town. With a character like Kate, you just can't go wrong.
Think "Fargo" with a more modern twist. I can't wait for Dube to finish book three.
Kate is a wonderful character. She is older, a bit world-weary, a tad aloof, focused on her job. She has had a lot on her plate, taking on a "man's job" that a good man was passed over for. She has managed to draw her people into a more cohesive unit, but it is still a bit shaky and she is still a bit tentative in her own mind. But there is nothing tentative or shaky about this story - Ms. Dube has a sure hand with a story. She draws me in and makes me care about the characters, their pain, their joy, their every-day conflicts and the murders they must solve. Another good story, very well told.
I've read two of the Mendenhall Mysteries and have enjoyed them both.Good mystery and good character development.

I love this author and the Mendenhall series. Will be reading the rest of the series as fast as Dube can write them.
